#24 Ultimate Vocabulary review

Bottom line: Lives up to its name

Review: Ultimate Vocabulary* is a piece of software that can really improve your vocabulary. This review highlights some of the software's features that we found particularly useful.

Ultimate Vocabulary provides several sets of word lists that start as easy but get harder as you go. We were surprised by how many words we did not know until using Ultimate Vocabulary. These words are not esoteric; rather, they are useful words that convey meanings that other words might not capture quite as well. Examples are:

  • quiescent (quiet, still, inactive)
  • proselytize (convert to another faith or religion)
  • propitious (presenting favorable circumstances)
  • primogeniture (right of inheritance belonging exclusive to the eldest son)
  • munificent (very generous)

Ultimate Vocabulary makes learning words fun and easy. You can create your own custom word lists where you collect all the words that are new to you. You learn the new word through links to definitions, synonyms, antonyms, and flash cards.

You then test yourself until you have mastered the new word. You can choose several ways to master the new words. For example, you can take:

  • the "Definition Test", which asks you to correctly match a definition with 1 of 4 words;
  • the "Word Test", which gives you a word that you must correctly match with 1 of 4 definitions; and
  • synonym tests and antonym tests.

When you feel more confident about a word, you can take the "Word Recall" test. The Word Recall test gives you a definition; you must then type in the word that matches the definition.

You can improve your spelling with the Spelling Test. The Spelling Test asks you to type the word you hear; all the words come with audio pronunciation by a real person (as opposed to a computer-generated voice).

The makers of Ultimate Vocabulary know their stuff. For example, Ultimate Vocabulary links to an etymology database that provides the history and original meaning of the word you are learning. Knowing the original meaning of a word is one of the most important parts of learning a new word; knowing the original meaning also helps in learning related words (see #18 Expanding Your Vocabulary: How to Use a Dictionary).

Ultimate Vocabulary's makers also know the importance of seeing words in context. Ultimate Vocabulary comes with a database of many example sentences for each word you are learning.

But our favorite part of Ultimate Vocabulary is the "Word Messenger". Turn on the Word Messenger Mode and see what happens ...
